Is It a Virus or Just a Slow Computer?

The two situations can look similar on the surface — here's how to tell them apart.

Not every slow or misbehaving computer has a virus — but it's a common worry, and the two situations can look similar on the surface. Here's how to tell them apart.

Signs that point more toward a virus or malware:

  • Pop-up ads appearing even when you're not browsing the web
  • Your browser's homepage or search engine changed without you doing it
  • New toolbars or programs you don't remember installing
  • Antivirus software turning itself off, or being unable to turn it back on
  • Friends or contacts receiving strange messages or emails "from you" that you didn't send
  • A sudden spike in slowness that came on quickly, rather than gradually worsening over months

Signs that usually point to ordinary slowness, not a virus:

  • The computer has been getting gradually slower over a long period (months or years)
  • It's slow specifically when starting up or with many programs open, but fine otherwise
  • The computer is several years old
  • Nothing looks visually different — no new pop-ups, toolbars, or unfamiliar programs

Why this distinction matters: treating ordinary slowness like a virus (running repeated scans, reinstalling the operating system) wastes time without fixing the real issue. But treating an actual infection like ordinary slowness — just living with it — can leave your personal information at risk, since some malware is designed to capture passwords or financial information quietly in the background.

If you're seeing any of the virus warning signs above, it's worth having it looked at properly rather than guessing. Virus and malware removal is handled through our onsite or drop-off service — see Onsite Pricing → — so the job can get the hands-on time it needs.

If it sounds more like ordinary slowness, a remote tune-up session is usually all that's needed. See Remote Support & Pricing →
